Official press release:
Roald Dahl's very first children's book and one of this most popular stories, James and the Giant Peach, now comes to the stage in David Wood's brand new adaptation performed by the Birmingham Stage Company, the UK's leading theatre producers of Roald Dahl's work. The show has just started an 18 month long UK tour visiting over 50 venues all over the country from February 2002 to July 2003. There will also be six local teenagers chosen by audition at each venue to take part in the production.
The story tells the amazing tale of James, a lonely young boy who lives with Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, two of the most revolting aunts in England (and two of Dahl's most delightfully horrible creations!). They make James work and clean all the time and never let him play with other children. Then one day an accident with a bag full of magic near an old peach tree makes some truly incredible things start to happen! James's adventures begin and take him both up in the sky and across the sea. He meets many wonderful insect characters and together they face danger and difficulties with a giant peach!
James and the Giant Peach is the sixth Dahl play to be presented by Birmingham Stage Company, who have gained a great reputation for their exciting children's productions. The title role will be played by Joel Chalfen, who was the Boy in BSC's sellout tour of Dahl's 'The Witches'. James and the Giant Peach will be directed by Graeme Messer, designed by Jacqueline Trousdale with lighting by Brian Harris and music by Mary McAdam.
James and the Giant Peach is sponsored by Cape and is wonderful
entertainment for all the family!
